Video update: Mercedes SLS AMG

no comment Posted by onlydreamcars

Mercedes-Benz has released some more promotional material of the upcoming 2010 SLS AMG. The earlier driving footage is now joined by a number of new clips including studio beauty shots. You’ll see close attention is paid to details like the open gullwing doors, LED daytime running lights and an engine bay cutaway. While the soundtrack of the engine is heard throughout the video, the interior and a number of its features are revealed.

The SLS AMG is a modern interpretation of the original 300 SL “Gullwing” produced between 1952 and 1963. It features a 6.3-litre (6208cc) naturally aspirated V8 making 420kW (571hp) and 650Nm of torque sent to the rear wheels by a 7-speed double clutch transmission. It will run from 0 - 100km/h in 3.8 seconds and top off at 315km/h.

Video: Mercedes SLS AMG

Generally a roadster has a long bonnet, a very low profile, and a small boot. Only two people can sit in it. This new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG pretty much fits this definition. Already confirmed as a Frankfurt debutant, the video shows some of the SLS’ abilities on a track and on the road.

A main attraction is the sound trumpeting from the shiny twin tailpipes, urged on by the naturally aspirated 6.3-litre AMG V8 powerplant. You can hear a lot of the sound if you put up the volume as it accelerates into the straight or when cornering.

The V8 produces 571hp, which the driver can access through the 7-speed double clutch gearbox and the round 3-stage ESP knob which changes the suspension’s characteristics from everyday comfort to sharp and sporty.

The SLS will be in the showrooms before the end of the year and compete with supercars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo.

Video: 2010 Mercedes S63/S65 AMG Facelift + Details

no comment Posted by onlydreamcars

New details have been released for both the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and S65 AMG facelifts.  With a starting price of €115,700 before tax, the S63 AMG short-wheelbase brings a 525 horsepower, 6.3-liter V8 engine producing up to 630 Nm of torque.  A long wheelbase model is available for an additional €6,000.

At €185,900 the S65 AMG is hardly cheap, but the 612 horsepower delivered by the 6.0-liter biturbo V12 may be enough to convince new customers.  The V12 delivers a massive 1000 Nm of torque, guaranteeing a 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the S63.  Both cars are electronically limited to 250 km/h.  On the S63 the driver controls the AMGSPEEDSHIFT 7G-Tronic transmission, while the S65 utilizes a five-speed automatic.

Impressively, Mercedes did not have to degrade the performance of these two vehicles to improve fuel economy.  Both “consumption and CO2 emissions” were reduced “by up to 3 percent.”

From the looks of these two cars, it seems many of the 8,000 current S-Class AMG customers may get a little jealous.  A new arrow-shaped radiator grille - with twin chrome louvres on the S65 - is an effective status symbol on a car that commands respect.  AMG-spec LED daytime lights are mounted just above the air outlets on either side of the front apron.

You can read more details, including information about the Split-View COMAND system, in the press release below. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG go on sale at the end of the month.

Tuner AMG ends the horsepower war

no comment Posted by onlydreamcars

Mercedes-Benz’ in-house tuning division, AMG, has decided to turn with the popular tide and stop the horsepower tuning, with AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg saying, “We are going to use other ways to extract better performance, including weight saving, engine optimization and alternative technologies.”

The new Mercedes E63 AMG will be lighter than the outgoing model and have the option of the manual wet-clutch gearbox first seen on the SL63, in order to provide more grunt with better economy.

Mornhinweg confirmed that the company was looking at producing a smaller AMG model. It was also suggested that Mercedes’ diesel, hybrid, and four-cylinder engines may be re-engineered for AMG performance.

Video: Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

no comment Posted by onlydreamcars

This video of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series tells the most recent information on the new car.

The SL65 AMG Black Series is bolstered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine with two turbos, making heavyweight punches worth 1000 Nm of torque. A notable fact is that like the legendary E55 AMG, both SL65 AMG and Black Series versions work with a 5-speed semi-automatic gearbox, instead of Merc’s latest 7-speed G-Tronic unit. A top speed of 320km/h is attainable (limited at that), and 0 - 100km/h is dispatched in 3.8 seconds.
